There was a game once, and we have lost nearly all of it.
We know it was called knattleikr. We know it was played on ice and on frozen ground, that a match could run for days, that men were carried off it and some of them did not get up. Egil Skallagrimsson killed a boy over a game of it when he was seven years old, and the saga records this the way it records weather. We know there was a ball, and a bat, and two sides, and that the whole district came to watch.
We do not know the rules. Nobody wrote them down. Everybody already knew them.
So they are gone — a sport a whole people played and argued about and travelled to see, and it went into the ground with the last person who could have explained it, and all that's left are the bruises in the margins of other men's stories.
We are not going to recover it. Nobody is.
But we can pick sides.
Six shields. Six lands. Danmǫrk. Noregr. Svíþjóð. Grænland. Garðaríki. Suðreyjar. Denmark and Norway and Sweden, Greenland at the edge of the world, the Rus running rivers east into places that had never heard of them, and the Isles out west where Norse met Gael and neither of them left.
They would have played each other. Of course they would have. Men who crossed oceans to fight strangers were not going to pass up a chance to break each other's hands over a ball.
Take a shield. Take a side.
The game is gone. The rivalry doesn't need it.
